The Portrait & Self-Portrait

Juror’s Statement

A passion of mine is portrait painting. Every angle, line and shape in nature is waiting to emerge through the realism or abstraction of the face as the artist captures its essence. This month’s show included that realism and abstraction within the portraiture, with creative and powerful use of mediums. It was enriching to judge the wide range of talented portrait artists in this show The Portrait & Self-portrait. Not an easy task but a rewarding one. Congratulations to all the artists of this show!

Ali Khoshkam’s, portrait painting, Younes, (Best of Show) is dramatic with its depth of contrast of darks and lights, and the movement of the ink as it flows down the page. The portrait conveys tension with the use of the strong creative detail of the facial features and the use of the unfinished areas as if the person is emerging from the shadows and we are captured as waiting viewers to see the person completely appear. The masters enticed us this way with visual tension and Khoshkam succeeds as a contemporary.

The young man’s eyes make us pause and contemplate his pose in the striking portrait photograph by Les Schmidt, Tradition in Progress (First Place). The subtle blur of his toe mimics the background motion…is he content or restless perched on the receptacle? Schmidt’s photo journalism skills give us a portrait that can tell a story and execute creative contrast and emotion.

Alison Kruse’s portrait painting, Mr. Justin (Second Place), leaps at the viewer with splashes of bold color, crashing together to form a portrait with eyes and hands frozen, yet seem to move from all the juxtaposition of color. Kruse’s painting technique of contrasting colors with the graphic style gives a strong reaction to the viewer and delights our senses.

Rhee Reamy’s digital mixed media portrait, Edge of Extinction (Third Place), exudes the mood of finality with it skull portrait gnawing at the “machine” of life. Digital texture and filtered blends are executed well by Reamy. It is a visual feast as the viewer’s eyes flow down the levels of detail, and continuing back up with the use of repetitive shapes in the triangles of the chin and forehead. The deep contrast of the eyes and nose against the lighter areas of the face give the illusion of depth hold us…to the edge.

The painting, Feelin’ Red (Fourth Place) by Cathy Rowten fires up the canvas with a graphic splash of red paint for the model’s hair against that perfect green background, (good execution of contrast), and we are lured in with that smile. Rowten’s use of fluid shapes of paint on the arm, hand and face keeps a fresh approach to portraiture making it alive and vivid.

The Honorable Mentions are much more to me that a mention! The talented artists, their techniques and use of creativity are a must see to appreciate. Check out the different mediums! I congratulate all of you for your submissions!

First Place

Les Schmidt

"Tradition in Progress"

Archival pigment print, B&W Photography , 15" x 15"

Sale Price $1150

Les Schmidt was born and raised in the Northeast, where frequent family trips to the shore and through farm country served as early influences. He moved to New Orleans in 1982, stimulated by the city’s rich history of artists, Old World architecture and famous waterways. He started making photographs in 2001 after being asked to style photo shoots for a local modern architect, instantly becoming captivated by the art and process of photography. Les attended the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, twice winning the Owen Murphy Faculty Award for Photography. He is currently represented by Guy Lyman Fine Art.

Schmidt primarily captures austere, coastal landscapes, but has recently developed a body of work focused on still life, as seen in the 2015 exhibition Dorothy Jean at Guy Lyman Fine Art in New Orleans. He has documented Hurricane Katrina represented by his portfolio Katrina TEN and has just added a series of abstractions made with an old BlackBerry Storm camera phone. His work has been shown in New Orleans, LA; Monroe, LA; Lafayette, LA; Covington, LA; Grand Isle, LA; Seaside, FL; Naples, FL; Cape Girardeau, MO; Johnson City, TX; Minneapolis, MN; Essex Junction, VT and Portland, OR. His photographs have also been used in the 2013 film Ender’s Game, in the January 2012 issue of IQ Magazine, and in Chrysler’s Super Bowl XLVI commercial starring Clint Eastwood. His work has been reviewed in Art Voices (Issue 21, 2009) and Pelican Bomb (November 2015) and published in exhibition catalogues by Black Box Gallery, PhotoPlace Gallery, Mpls Photo Center and Darkroom Gallery.

Second Place

Alison Kruse

"Mr. Justin"

oil on canvas , 24" x 18"

Sale Price $NFS

Alison Kruse Artist Statement

My work reflects my interest in the private/ public domains of the home. Using the daily routine as an inspiration, my paintings are intended to be scenes of comfort. While they are familiar scenes, they lack clarity. Using rapid application, drawing, or keeping the board or canvas visible, I want my paintings to represent candidness as well as the idea of fleeting memory. I am cataloguing the inner thought that goes on behind every day. The home is associated with the feeling of comfort and being safe. I want these paintings to reflect that while targeting themes of anxiety, restlessness, and the anticipation of change.

Short Resume

Alison Kruse was born in Princeton, New Jersey. Alison has her Bachelor of Fine Art and a minor in Art History from Queen’s University in Kingston Ontario.  Her work reflects her interest in the private/ public domain of the home. Heavily inspired by Nordic art, her style is expressive Impressionism. Her work will be on display in Small World Coffee in Princeton New Jersey from June 13th to July 13th .

Third Place

Rhee Reamy

"Edge of Extinction"

Digital Mixed Media , 16 " x 20"

Sale Price $250

Art is about those fleeting moments of visual magic where the emotional spirit is visually realized, “Like letting a Sunset embrace you, that powerful moment, between day & night and the mystery of being alive”.

It’s about communication. Art is visual communication transcending cultural trends and codes, not controlled by ego but by insightful automatic cues and rhythms. Art is about invention & re-invention, imagination and transcendence.

Art can change we look at the world. It can reveal a certain beauty or truth and disrupt or change our view of things. It can be a moment of epiphany, where we pause and our view of everything changes. Art is an unmediated experience; a one on one moment. At can unlock positional thinking, shatter taboos, disrupt normal patterns of our brain and has the power to open our heart and soul and defies boundaries. It transports, translates and transcends.

Art can be about pure expression, it does not need to be analyzed to the “nth degree. ”It’s not what you look at that matters it’s what you see. The world of reality has it’s limits, the world of the imagination is boundless.

Rhee Reamy has a lifetime of visual experience, inquiry and sensibility into the visual world. He is intrigued by the interplay of form, colour, shapes and textures and the inter-connections of the formal elements whether it be abstract or representational, He has a keen eye, discerning aesthetic and international insight.

Fourth Place

Cathy Rowten

"Feelin' Red"

oil on panel , 16" x 12"

Sale Price $1400

Primarily, a portrait painter, Cathy’s figurative pieces range from the classical style of commissioned portraits, to loose, contemporary and edgier renditions of her subjects.

Exploring the many ways of interpreting the human face and form offers an endless supply of challenges for the artist. “If I can use an unexpected color to emulate the same play of light and shadow, yet create more of the mood and feeling I want to project, I feel as if I have learned some new words in the language of art, that lets me express more of myself,” says Cathy.

She strives for paintings that form a relationship with the viewer because the subjects are people we can relate to, yet have a mystery about them that invites us to know more,. Cathy’s recent series of provocative and moody poses of women, entitled “Women of Mystery”, have made their way into numerous shows across the country, and on to collector’s walls.

Cathy is a Signature member of American Women Artists with award winning work in national shows and galleries. She also does commissioned portraits as well.

Artist Statement

My paintings are footprints of my journey in learning to express myself with art. Though I love nature and landscapes, I always come back to the figure as my primary inspiration. I never tire of seeing different ways light affects the contours of a face or the simple beauty of a standing dancer. While it is impossible to do proper justice to the human form, it is the challenge that motivates me.
