The Figure

Juror’s Statement

It has been said, “the human body is the best picture of the human soul.” The artists in this exhibition reveal their inner self through their observations and interpretations of the human figure as art.

Katty Smith’s Best of Show, “Beyond the Yellow Brick Road” personifies the interior of the human soul on the outside of the piece rather than contained within. By doing this she allows inner thoughts to be made visual. The organic voluptuous human form could stand on its on merit as an expressive sculpture but by covering the piece with images and textures the artist adds a spirit interpretation of what lies beneath the skin.

Jarred Fisher, 1st Place, “Falling Leaves,” on the other hand conceals the emotions of the model tightly within. The artist’s mastery of silver, gold, and iron metalpoint drawing technique creates a cold quiet environment for the figure offering only questions but no answer. The gray values evoke a feeling the model is hiding from the world yet is presented in an empowering stance of confidence and an acceptance of self. The hints of copper color make the figure more “human” and full of life.

Don Bergland uses the implied figure of a young child hiding behind a mask to create a narrative that can either be the innocence of childhood play or the masking of darker forces behind the masks. “Anniversary,” 2nd place is a hyper-realistic mystery. The artist placed every bit of information front of our eyes yet offers no hints or clues as to what is going on.

Kinetic energy is the theme of Joseph Grenn 3rd place painting, “Rio.” To look at this work is feel the movement and rhythm of the dancing figures all the while feeling and hearing the drum beat that spurs their dancing. Joe uses strong color value contrast to further enhance the movement of the dance.

“Jones Beach”, 4th place, by Tony Parillo ‘s classically drawn splice of life summer days activity at the beach. He expertly uses the layering of figures in reducing scale to create depth and feeling the beach and people go on forever. It is easy to feel the sun, hear the sounds of people playing in the water and tiny dramas of the families as they mark their small space on a crowded beach. An example of the drama is the male figure center left in the drawing that shows the frustration of trying to commune with nature only to find more people than nature.

The works selected for Honorable Mention represent the diversity of media and techniques utilized by the artist to express their feeling for the figure. Fabric, paint, digital art, transient light interaction, rock drawing & photography are but a few of the materials used to express the human figure as it moves through our existence.

Best Of Show

Katty Smith

"Beyond the Yellow Brick Road"

Clay, solid built, finished with terra sigillata and Mason stains , 20" x 15"

Sale Price $1800

Artist Statement

My primary focus when sculpting is the female human spirt that comes from being raised in a family of strong women. Often, I like to convey a message or tell a story through my sculpture. “Beyond the Yellow Brick Road” as we know it from the book and movie, The Wizard of Oz, is referred to as a spiritual allegory. By searching for answers in life, as you travel the yellow brick road and then reach the end of the road, you come to realize the answers are inside you and you have the power to control your own destiny through your God given talents.

“Beyond the Yellow Brick Road” was coil built with Max White paper clay; the story was drawn and incised on the surface, and when the clay was bone dry, terra sigillata was applied with Mason stains. After bisque firing, copper oxide wash was applied and wiped off, then the sculpture was fired a second time. The color was enhanced by the application of a matte sealer.

Biography

When Katty Smith grew up in the small rural southern town of Halifax, Virginia, art was not a topic of discussion among the less than one thousand residents.  The opportunities to express any artistic ability were somewhat limited to coloring books and drawing scenes on the chalkboard. None the less, having a very large closely knit extended family, highlighted by frequent memorable gatherings, and knowing most people in the town made the formative years a wonderful experience.

A year and a half at The Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro was put on hold when Katty married her high school sweetheart.   Ten years later with two children on board, she began her journey to a B.S. degree from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and eventually earned an MBA from the University of Toledo at age fifty-nine.  Anytime there was an opportunity to go to school, Katty was right there ready to enroll.

In 2008, at age sixty-five, Katty enrolled at Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah, GA, in a ceramic sculpting class.  The first day of class when she received her chunk of clay, her lifetime search ended and her passionate journey began. Never once in her sixty-five years of life had Katty ever dreamed of being an artist.

After moving to Florida in 2010, Katty enrolled at Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, FL, for three years of ceramic sculpting classes.   The purchase of a house with a large garage and a new kiln allowed Katty to become a studio artist in New Smyrna Beach, FL, in 2013.  Now in her spare time, she plays tennis and volunteers locally at The Hub Gallery on Canal, at the Artists’ Workshop, Inc., and teaches occasional sculpting workshops.   She belongs to art associations that offer exhibiting opportunities and has won numerous awards to include four best in show awards. Katty currently exhibits her work at The Hub on Canal in New Smyrna Beach.

"Falling Leaves"

Silver, Gold, and Iron (Oxidized) on Paper/ Metalpoint Drawing , 12'' x 8''

Sale Price $900

Artist Statement

“Falling Leaves” actually started out as a series of compositional sketches for a larger painting. The model I happened to be working with at that time had long, red, wavy hair, and that led me to think about how I could possibly express the qualities of her hair in one my favorite mediums, metalpoint drawing, which is traditionally devoid of both color and texture.

Control over traditional metalpoint (gold, silver, platinum, ect) can be a somewhat capricious enterprise because the materials have something of a life of their own. It’s these “living qualities” of metalpoint that I prize however. That the metals oxidize and organically transform with time, that marks can’t be erased and serve as historical reminders of the mistakes that lead to a finished work are part of what make the medium so captivating to me. In trying to add ferrous metals to the equation, I found myself struggling to gain the necessary control required to create realistic works. After countless hours of experiments (including a destroyed prior version of the drawing), I ascertained how to best control the oxidizing/rusting process, how to influence the color/value of the rust, and how to not destroy the other metals used in the process.

My desire to express particular qualities of the model, which were limited by the media, compelled me to invent and experiment. “Falling Leaves” represents a theme I constantly finding myself wrestling with as an artist, marrying the traditional and classical with contemporary progress. In “Falling Leaves” this marriage led to a unique work which is pushing my endeavors in metalpoint in exciting new directions.

Second Place

Don Bergland

"Anniversary"

Pigment Print , 24" x 30"

Sale Price $575

Artist Statement

Don Bergland’s work is an alchemical adventure into the mysteries of his own philosophy, beliefs, and values. For him, studio practice is an intellectual activity, both on his part as the creator, and on the part of the viewer as translator of the experience. As a result, he tries to place mental inquiry at the heart of each image he creates. He consciously inserts symbolic interactions and connections within the objects populating his theatrical sets, and encourages viewers to build their own narrative interpretations of these connections. He attempts to arrange the elements in his images in a way that connects a pivotal object or theme with association, symbolism, and metaphor. For Don, the enclosed space of the visual image is a cerebral theater populated by realistic sets, objects, and figures which when combined with intention, offer challenging enigmas. He intends that the viewer will engage with the work, note surfaces, relationships, symbols, and metaphors, and will then construct personal meaning from the engagement. Like all studio-based languages of imaginative possibility, he has merely begun the journey of building and refining his own visual syntax and grammar of cerebral imagination. Each of his works is a record of that journey.”

Fourth Place

Anthony J Parillo

"Jones Beach"

Graphite, graphite powder , 40" x 70"

Sale Price $2500

Artist’s Statement

I’ve loved drawing from the figure all my life or at least since art school in the 1970s. Last summer I decided to experiment with some larger pieces, working from a 40-inch-wide roll of Strathmore Drawing paper. I wanted to loosen up and try to achieve a feeling of spontaneity. A day at Jones Beach in New York provided the perfect subject. During the hot summer months a narrow strip of the Earth a few hundred yards wide and several miles long is jammed with tens of thousands of human beings. Walking the length of the beach there are scores of languages and even more skin colors. Everyone is as close to being naked as legally possible and there are no inhibitions. It’s a scene of teeming, scrambling children, adults trying haplessly to keep track of them, then giving up and behaving like them. There are intimate couples threading quietly through whole extended families and solitary individuals just contemplating the pounding surf. And I guess that could be me right there in the middle, taking everything in. All under the hazy disk of the sweltering sun. Getting a sense of all that movement and sound made looseness and spontaneity virtually unavoidable. This was easily the most fun drawing I’ve ever done.
