Celebrating the modernity of creative contemporary and traditional art through online art competition
After spending time in various cities in southern India, it was a palpable relief to enter the Periyar Nature Preserve in the Cardamom Hills. We arrived just before dawn and walked through the thick mist, along trails created by bison and people. At first, visibility was quite limited. As dawn arrived, the mist melted and opened into a field with unfamiliar trees and shrubs. The quality of the light, mixed with the silence and the lack of people, made this feel like a timeless moment.
One of the things I connect with deeply about taking pictures is that it causes me to look more — and more intently — at what’s in front of me. I have gotten into the habit of seeing sections of my world of a size suitable for framing. I often find myself seeing things that gain in importance as they are separated from their surroundings. I started shooting landscapes several years ago, with the intention of finding compositions that captured the essence of a scene. I want to see balance and beauty in familiar scenes as well as accidental comings-together.
Throughout this practice, my aim is to see clearly what is there but is not noticed, to extend my vision by framing the familiar, the lost, the hidden to make a unique visual moment. It is deep work and it continually surprises me, connects me to this marvelous world and to myself.
I invite you into this on-going experiment in visual and spiritual exploration.
