Bauhaus Prairie Art Gallery

Celebrating the modernity of creative contemporary and traditional art through online art competition

April 2019 - Black & White Etc

Black & White Etc.

This months show, Black & White Etc., demonstrates the artistic mastery of a wide variety media presented primarily in black and white. Bauhaus Prairie Art Gallery decided this year to add, “Etc.” to the title of the exhibition to allow a small amount of color to be in the entries. The artists that elected to add color used the color to make the black & white appear more expressive and utilized a trick the eye by making the viewer see black & white in full color.

The over riding theme of this exhibition appears to be man and nature. The top five award winners’ art reinforces this theme (with an under-theme of societal issues).

Lief Sholman submitted the photo that was selected for Best of Show honors. Sholman did not stage the shot or use photographic tricks to enhance the scene but instead framed the shot to capture the perfect example of a one-point perspective photo. ‘March 2019” invites us to explore the wintery scene and discover what may be at the end of the path. The photo also implies that the winter has had a firm grip on us all but the promise of spring is at the end of the path.

“1000 Words”, First Place entry by Mary-Ellen Latino proves the adage, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” The artist presents a layered montage that speaks to nostalgic days past, with a splash of color emphasizing the figures surrounded by a mass of newspaper. It is hard to look at the work as just a reflection of time because of today’s society of insults and distrust of the news. What should be the happy adventure of a bike ride becomes a reminder of innocence lost and trust disputed.

“Looking Up” by Stacy Topjian-Searle, is a breath-taking drawing demonstrating mastery of her medium. The angle of this wooded scene is also a strong one-point perspective and makes the view up the tree powerfully dynamic. This Second Place drawing has everything: great subject, perspective, scale, technical skill and shows the amazing hand of the artist that can render realistic intriguing texture.

“Global Warming – Glacier Calving,” the Third Place winner by Vic Gladstone, makes the viewer more aware of what is happening to our world. Gladstone represents the pristine beauty of nature but by encapsulating the scene in a sphere makes what is happening to our glaciers all too real. The exposed rocks and cracked ice flows further underline the accelerated melting of our planet’s ice caps resulting in the critical rise in sea levels. Many can ignore the melting because we choose not to see the warning signs of a global fresh water shortage. This piece of art, however, is an in-your-face wake up call.

On a lighter note but still in the genre of our changing environment, Les Schmidt offers the “Fire Tree” for our consideration. This Fourth Place winner shows nature, represented by the spreading tree with the hope of being saved by man, or in this case a water supply to put out fires.

Honorable Mention

The eight pieces selected for honorable mention recognition represent a superior cross-section of all pieces in the show. In this group you will find nostalgic subjects, portraits both realistic and expressive, abstract painting, photography, incredible pencil renderings of animals and people as well as an extraordinary composition of line and texture. Congratulations to each of these artists for their outstanding work.

March 2019 BW, a view at path over Dyarna, a swampy area south of city Enkoeping (Enkoping) Sweden, a winter day 2019 in black and white. The pathway is covered with white snow, beside the boardwalk old yellowed grass from last year is seen. The image is taken from a low level like a very little child would see the world. We should sometimes think what the world is like in other peoples view.

Artist Statement

I am a passionate mixed media fiber artist and photographer inspired by nature and global travel. My intention in creating art is to share my personal vision and engage the viewer while transported to a special moment in time. “1000 words” was captured through the lens while walking in Lisbon Portugal. The graffiti and newsprint became my muse as I contemplated the phrase, “A picture is worth 1000 words”… “Though we travel the world to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Stacy Topjian Searle

"Look Up"

Pen and Ink , 10" x 14"

Sale Price $NFS

Artist Statement

My artwork is an exploration of the compositional and textural elements found in nature and rural settings.

Working exclusively in black and white, the strong contrast of ink on paper allows me to focus on the detail, tone and texture of my subject matter. To me, color is a distraction.

On a personal level there is a strong connection between my art and my faith. The close examination of nature, with pencil or pen, prompting a desire for deep introspective work.

Biography/Resume

Stacy Topjian Searle is a pen and ink landscape artist from Nashua, New Hampshire who works exclusively in black and white.

Searle began her art education at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston Massachusetts. She later earned a BA in Art from the University of Lowell, Lowell Massachusetts, where her focus was on Illustration.

Stacy uses on-site sketches and photographs as references for her work. She begins by laying out the general composition of a piece in pencil. Once a composition is in place, ink is applied to create a contour drawing of the scene. Detail is developed through her unique blend of cross hatching, contour lines, parallel lines, stippling and scrumbling techniques to create the mood of each piece.

Creation inspires most of Searle’s work and by focusing on the complexity and details of nature she hopes to increase awareness to the need for conservation and preservation.

Stacy is an award-winning juried artist and is a member of the Nashua Area Artists Association. She has participated in Nashua’s Art Walk and has exhibited in group exhibitions at ArtHub Gallery in Nashua, NH, Beaver Brook in Hollis, NH, the Whitty Gallery in Hollis, NH, the Brush Gallery in Lowell, MA, the ALL Gallery in Lowell, MA, Angles and Art Gallery in Haverhill, MA, The Fitchburg Art Museum in Fitchburg, MA, and Uforge Gallery in Boston, MA.

"Global Warming-Glacier Calving"

Digital image metal print , 24" x 24"

Sale Price $250

Artist Statement

Global Warming-Glacier Calving is a photograph taken at the Sawyer Glacier near Tracy Arm during a cruise along Alaska’s Inside Passage. There was significant calving of the glacier while we were at the site that the conservationist on board noted was due to global warming. In post processing I ‘shaped’ the image to represent a globe and this piece represents to me what global warming is doing to the earth’s glaciers.

Biography

I have been a photographer for over 45 years. I am a self-educated and self-taught photographer whose early work was 35mm black and white, chrome, and color imagery. Black and white photos were processed and printed in my darkroom. I migrated to digital photography and now exclusively capture, process, mat, and frame my digital images. I love the creativity and expression in photography. It is my hope that my images will enable others to enjoy the beauty of the world through my photographs.

I took this photograph off the highway at sunset in rural Louisiana. Something struck me about this lone country tree flanked by a tiny fire hydrant. It’s as if the pump knows it has one job, and that’s to stay by the tree’s side and help protect it.
