Bauhaus Prairie Art Gallery

Celebrating the modernity of creative contemporary and traditional art through online art competition

October 2017

Eclectic Art

Eclectic (adjective) an eclectic mix of art: wide-ranging, broad-based, varied, diverse, all embracing, multifaceted, multifarious, miscellaneous, or assorted.

Bauhaus Prairie Art Gallery presents a truly “Eclectic” exhibition this month:

Lynn Hye Ryoung Yang’s Best of Show digital composition, “New Land,” is an extraordinary layered composition of a future world replete showing pristine nature. It is a presentation of hope for the continuation of the human race. Her Sci-Fi illustration conveys optimism instead of the usual apocalyptic doom portrayed by most art of this genre. She demonstrates mastery of her medium as well as her positive vision for the future. Two other entries by this artist received Honorable Mention status.

“Crit Me” (1st Place) is an assemblage presented by artist Francesca Busca as a social statement about both the present and the future. This artist explores and challenges the future of humanity by creating art from objects of everyday life. Francesca states that she experiments “with new combinations, pairing and contrasting noble material with rubbish,” elevating discarded elements to high art. Brusca “believes in a future for humanity of resourceful innovation through reusing, recycling and up-cycling.”

The 2nd Place award is for a charcoal drawing by Leshe Kondo rendered in the traditional style of great Baroque art of the 1600’s. “Triumph Mercy (Sprouting Birth)” would be classified in the fantasy realm because the subject portrays a vision of the supernatural also harkens back to Greek and Roman mythology in composition and presentation. Loshe masterfully uses her medium to render a work that could easily be misidentified as an etching because of its precision, clean execution. The details are subtle yet amazingly powerful.

“Abraxas,” 3rd Place entry by Marina Korenfeld could be considered in the Steampunk genre. She uses the etching process to show a female figure dressed in clothing that is both modern and a throwback to the past. She incorporates a mythical dragon but injects hints of industrialism by making the dragon appeal to be raised off the printing plate through repoussé as well as other marks on the printing plate that emulate welds and rivets.

Ji In Yoon’s watercolor, “Free Spirit,” received 4th Place honors. Yoon utilizes active movement of abstract figures to create a painting that has the viewer engaged in a figural dance through space and time. The use of shadows further enhances the depth and movement of this composition.

The eight pieces of work that received Honorable Mention further accentuate the “eclectic” nature of this show representing both traditional and contemporary art styles and a diversity of media. They range from Fauvism, abstraction, realism, Sci-fi, futurism to surrealism and utilize watercolor, acrylic, mixed media and digital art processes. They were selected for their strong art composition, subject and mastery of media and are a good cross section for an Eclectic Art Exhibition.

Artist Statement

Her goal? To provoke!

To Francesca, art has the same importance as philosophy: its ultimate purpose is to provoke something in the viewer of its time. She feels a compelling urge to convey a message to the viewer, whether a thought or a pure emotion, as strongly as her technical and creative capabilities will allow.

Torn between optimism and surrender, Francesca is haunted by the idea of mankind’s imminent self-destruction. Yet, she believes in a future for humanity of resourceful innovation through reusing, recycling and upcycling. She is fascinated by colours and textures of both artificial and natural elements, which she hunts for in everyday life and plays with in new combinations, pairing and contrasting noble material with rubbish. Her aim is to prove how rubbish is a relative definition and how it can be turned into something useful, fun and even beautiful. She thoroughly enjoys working within the ethical and material limitations which this choice entails.

She has a true passion for mosaic, as it allows the use materials of all sorts: she strives to show the beauty and significance of each material uses, in each tiny piece. She never stops learning and experimenting. She is on a mission to show the incredible – yet still quite unknown – potential of modern mosaic, as a fine art in its own right.

Artist Statement

My work is mainly painting, photography, etc. It is mainly two dimensional activity.
There is a drawing on one of the big pillars constituting the work of my painting.
I believe that drawing is not merely to faithfully reproduce the shape that it sees and that I need to draw states that can not be expressed by the underlying facts and words.
The intention underlying the theme of this work is the birth of a new spirit born from the fusion of oriental culture and western culture. Also, I expect it.

Artist Statement

The theme of self-introspection is crucial to my art, since I believe that only by delving into the enigmas of the self can an individual truly engage with the world and bring about change in a profound, meaningful way.

Though I consider myself primarily a Symbolist, my art draws on a wide variety of mythologies, worldviews, religions, and literary traditions, both ancient and modern, ranging from Buddhism to Russian folklore.
